De Birhan’s sources have confirmed that the government of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed in yet another surprise move is releasing 304 prisoners today.
289 of the prisoners were convicted in terror charges and 9 were on death row.
Four of the freed are foreign citizens among which 3 are Kenyans and one British citizen. Of which 289 convicted in terror charges, 9 on death row, 3 kenyans, one British national called Abebe Wondemagegne, accused of links with recently released opposition leader Andargachew Tsige.
De Birhan had first reported Abebe’s arrest in Addis Abeba along with artist wife in 2013.
Abebe Wondemagene, a resident of London, was charged by Ethiopian authorities suspected of links with the Ethiopian opposition Movement, Ginbot 7’s leader Andargachew Tsige and “trying to detonate explosives near Bole, Addis Abeba, Ethiopia.”
Abebe Kassie, often mentioned as one of the examples of torture in Ethiopian prisons under the TPLF security, has also been released today.
