Mohammed Al Amoudi’s MIDROC Lega Dembi Gold Mine License Suspended After Protests



After protests by locals against the renewal of Gold mining license for Mohammed International Development & Research Organization Companies’ (MIDROC) in Lega Dembi, Oromo regional state of Ethiopia, state media have reported today that the government has suspended the mining license of the Organisation.

Bloomberg had reported yesterday that demonstrators had blockaded roads in Shakiso, 358 kilometers (222 miles) south of the capital, Addis Ababa, since April 30 to press their demand that Mohammed International Development & Research Organization Companies’ license to mine the metal be canceled,  and protests have spread to the towns of Ginchi and Nekemte in western Oromia, he said.

The owner of the organisation, a Saudi citizen of an Ethiopian origin Mohammed Ali Al Amoudi has been detained in Saudi Arabia along with scores of business people suspected of corruption since November 2017.
