Gerreta (crowd and confusion), a short film by Ethiopian journalist and filmmaker, Mantegaftot Sileshi Seyoum, has won Gold at the 2018 Young African Film Maker Award (YAFMA) yesterday in Brussels, Belgium.

The Hangman, a fiction by Zwelethu Radebe from South Africa, a 32 minute fiction, took the Silver. Mon identité, a documentary by Senegalese/Burundi Diane Kaneza got the Special Award of the Jury.

Produced in Kenya, the Oscar nominated, Watu Wote got a special mention at YAFMA.

Gerreta took the first place because “the jury appreciated the way this filmmaker managed, in a short of 8 min, to tell us a story, of a very loving father, struggling with social and human reality.”

The production was also commended by the awarding body for “the choice, the chronology and the incredible montage of images.”

It has been learnt from the award reports that  the objective of YAMFA is “to create a positive vision of Africa in the media. The aim of the award is not only to help individual careers, but also to work as a center of contact and dialogue for the African film world. Its underlying purpose is the development of a strong community and of mutual understanding of cultural diversity.”

Released in 2015, Gerreta, has been nominated to various international film awards and won several of them so far.
