Ethiopian Gov’t Official on a 200,000 Birr Plus (around $9K) Monthly Salary to be Sacked




The CEO of the Ethiopian Tourism Organisation (ETO), Yohannes Tilahun, who has been earning a monthly salary of over 200,000 Birr per month since May 2017, is refereed for dismissal, Addis Abeba based private English weekly Addis Fortune and pro-government Radio Station, Zami Radio reported.

CEO of Ethiopian Airlines, Tewolde Gebremedhin, who heads the Ethiopian Tourism Comission’s Board is reportedly the one who wrote the dismissal letter.

“Yohannes has allegedly been receiving monthly salaries from two bodies: 14,000 Br from the government and 8,000 dollars from the UNDP.” Fortune reported.

EthiopicaLink program on Zami Radio reported that Hirut Woldemariam (PhD),Minister of Culture and Tourism, had approved the salary.

Yohannes worked for the Ethiopian Investment Commission (EIC),  General Electric (GE) Ethiopia, and at the Agricultural Transformation Agency (ATA) before his current post.

Yohannes, educated in the US lived and worked  there before returning to Ethiopia in 2012. He started work at Morgan Stanleyin the US.

Ethiopian social media users suspected that Yohannes could be used as scapegoat in the current government crackdown. Various reports allege that several Ethiopian government have stashed several millions of dollars in various Asian banks when they actually earn monthly salaries less than 1000 dollars.

A recent report by an amateur Youtube Vlogger in Addis Abeba, had reported that there are some Ethiopia employees earning nearly a million birr per month.
