There was an Anti-Gov’t Protest in Wolkite, South Ethiopia Today, Several Killed, Gov’t Offices Destroyed



Welkite/ Wolkite is a town and woreda is the administrative center of the Gurage Zone of the Southern Nations, Nationalities and Peoples’ Region (SNNPR),  South West Ethiopia. Based on the 2007 national Census  the town has a total population of around 30,000 people.

Following peaceful protests about maladminstartion, corruption and abuse of power in the past few weeks, today the town saw one of the most deadly protests in the recent history of the town. At least five people were killed and several proprieties and offices of the local government were burnt down.

Market boycott, road closures and demonstrations took place in the town.

The etate broadcaster said one person was killed. The cause of the protest, according to the local government communications head is related to the delay of planned development works.

The town is under the control of the Federal police and the National Defence Forces, the head said.
