A fire that broke out and ensuing gunshots by government securities have reportedly led to the death of at least 20 inmates and the injury of several inmates in Ethiopia’s high security prison, Kilinto, where scores of Ethiopia opposition leaders and activists are held, Addis Abeba based Addis Fortune newspaper and other sources.

Debre Markos prison, Northern Ethiopia, was gutted by fire two days ago.

The cause of the fire is unknown. Several federal police and the government’s secret squad Agazi forces were seen around the prison according to witnesses.

Our co-blogger and activist Zelalem Workagegnehu is now being held in Kaliti Prison, few Kilo Meters away from Kilinto. Since this trend is becoming too common, we are really worried about our co-blogger’s safety and the hundreds of prisoners of conscience held there including journalist Eskinder Nega, Andargachew Tsige and Okelo Aquay among many.
