Three staff members of the UN Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) have been arrested by Ethiopian securities on Thursday, Ethiopian Satellite Television (ESAT) has reported. According to ESAT, the detained individuals are Ethiopian citizens namely: Mikias Cherenet, Melaku Bulto and Fantahun Gedlu.
The trio were detained after an alleged discovery of several types of weapons in the premises of the UN.
ESAT added that the ECA community has been asking how Carlos Lopes, Executive Secretary of the ECA, allowed the Ethiopian government securities to arrest UN staff members. ESAT indicated that Carols has even cooperated in the arrest.
Some Ethiopian employees of the Commission suspect that the whole thing has been organised by the Ethiopian government.
ESAT’s report also mentions about the personal relationship of the Secretary of the Commission and senior members of the Ethiopian government such as the late Prime Minister Meles Zenawi and Arkebe Equbay.
