Ethiopian Rights Association AHRE calls for immediate release of bloggers, journalists




The Brussels based Ethiopian rights association, The Association of Human Rights in Ethiopia (AHRE) has today called for the “immediate and unconditional” release of Ethiopian journalists and bloggers.

AHRE released a press release specifically focusing on co-blogger of De Birhan Media/Blog Zelalem Workagegnhu, his colleagues Bahiru Degu and Yoantan Wolde and two other journalists Getachew Shiferaw and Fikadu Mirkana.

Yared Hailemariam, Director of AHRE, said “Despite the growing condemnation from the international community, the Ethiopian government has continued to systematically persecute individuals who are critical of government policy.”

AHRE, finally stressed that it  “urges the Ethiopia Government to create an enabling environment for civil society in line with its national and international human rights obligation including by releasing all arbitrarily detained human rights defenders, journalists and protestors.”

Zelalem Workagegnehu, Bahiru Degu and Yonatan Wolde are set to appear before the High Court on April 7, 2016 for decision.
